Pete Kohut

Passion + Painting = Pete

I've been painting for over 20 years now. In that time I've learned that it is enthusiasm for painting that will get you through to your 10,000 hours. You have to do it everyday, whether you feel like it or not. There's no easy route or quick answers. It is hours and hours of hard work, soul searching, and trust in the unknown. So when I meet people who react strongly to my work, it makes it all worthwhile. That's where you come in. THANK YOU!

This website is a curated window of the art that I make. It showcases my paintings and drawings from the last few years. Please feel free to share my images and send me comments via the contact page. The smaller works are for sale and some of the larger works are available as prints (both via Paypal).

Pete Kohut's painting explores the boundaries between representation and abstraction. Using the subject of the body as a jumping off point, Kohut's work seeks to solidify the notion that representation and abstraction are simply tools in a painter's toolbox. In addition, Kohut believes that a painting is not only an image, but an object that is charged with energy and is ever-changing. This manifests itself through Kohut's interest in reactive painting (wherein the image is discovered as the painter paints it), gestural mark making, and layering of space and forms.

His work has been shown in Central and Southern Vancouver Island and on the mainland in Greater Vancouver. In 2016 and 2017, Kohut was a semi-finalist in the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series in Vancouver, BC.

He currently lives and works in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
